Introduction

School photos capture and present the change and continuity of individual schools, and serve as visual records of social and cultural history of a society. Photos of school buildings and campuses showcase architectural designs of various styles and document changes of landscape in different parts of the colony. Formal school photos shot against the backdrop of national flags, portraits or religious symbols represent the diverse cultural and political ideals of schools, which were also shown in pictures of extra-curricular activities, such as sports, social services and religious gatherings. Ethnic composition of a school community, clothing, uniform and even hair style worn by students and teachers depict a more sophisticated history of education not easily found in official reports.
